The tournament season has kicked off and travel baseball teams from all over the State are competing in weekend tournaments.  The 10U Jr Chiefs hosted the Battle at the Big Chief Tournament as they have in the previous 9 years but this was one was a little different.  The tournament filled quickly and all of the sudden there were 3 teams on a waiting list.  The tournament director, Coach Michael Costoulas negotiated with the Sequoyah High School Booster Club and gained access to the high school softball field and opened up registration to (10) teams.  Spots were filled immediately completing a solid field of baseball teams.  Two more squads inquired so Michael opened registration up again and now had a record (12) teams participating from all skill levels; AA to Major.  Tournament action commenced on Friday night with four pools of three teams playing each other for seeding into the Championship Bracket and Silver Bracket on Saturday night and all day Sunday.  Saturday’s action kicked off at 8am and concluded with the last pool play game mid-afternoon under clear blue skies.  The first four bracket games started late afternoon, which set the table for semi-final and championship action on Sunday.

The return to the park on Sunday for Coach Costoulas and his staff was troubling as the overnight rain saturated both Tommy Mann Field and the SHS Field.  After working tirelessly on Tommy Mann Field, play started two hours and twenty minutes later than scheduled.  In a surprise move, games were relocated to Dwight Terry Park after the High School felt they could not get the field ready.  The Jr Chiefs would like to thank the Jr Grizzlies and Coach Pridemore for helping coordinate the effort.   As most tournaments in the area were cancelled, the Jr Chiefs found a way to complete the tournament and not sacrificing any baseball games in the process.  Brent Pickens, head of the umpire staff for the tournament said, “I have never seen a staff work as hard as Michael’s did and even then I thought we were done with baseball for the day.  Not to mention they had to get another field ready, move teams, relocate umpires, reschedule games, just about anyone would have just canceled.  I am just glad I was a part of this historic event as the baseball was second to none.”

Due to the determination of the Jr Chiefs staff, two new champions were crowned Sunday.  The Gold Bracket Champion was the Premier Bears and the runner up was Sawnee Mountain Thunder.  The Silver Bracket Champion was the River Ridge Jr Knights and the runner up was Eastside Crush.  Congratulations to the champions and the Jr Chiefs Baseball Club would like to thank everyone for participating this year and they hope to see everyone next year.
